Plant-level capacity data
Methodology — Resource Transition Monitor
This tool tracks actual generation capacity transitions for regulated electric utilities using EIA Form 860 generator-level data. Unlike utility-filed IRP projections, this data reflects actual installed capacity — what utilities own and operate, not what they plan to build or retire.
Capacity MW = Summer Capacity (MW) by fuel type · Aggregated from generator level to utility level
Transition = Change in MW by fuel type from 2014 to 2024
Fleet Age = Capacity-weighted average age (MW × age / total MW) per fuel type
Planned Additions = Proposed generators from Form 860 Schedule 3 · 2024 filing only
Fuel categories: Coal (BIT/SUB/LIG/ANT) · Gas (NG/OG) · Nuclear (NUC) · Solar (SUN) · Wind (WND) · Hydro (WAT/PS) · Storage (MWH/BAT) · Biomass (BLQ/WDS/OBG/LFG).
Planned addition status codes: U/V = Under construction · L = Regulatory approvals pending · T = Approvals received · P = Planned only · TS = Construction complete. Only U, V, T, TS represent near-certain additions. L and P remain subject to change.
Data: EIA Form 860 Annual Electric Generator Report · 2014–2024 · Independent of all utilities.
